Chopper over the grapevines, keeping the frost away

The chopper was out over the grapevines this morning. A big high over the North Island of New Zealand created the ideal conditions for a frost. It got pretty nippy and fortunately the frost was not to hard. Click on this link for a short vid Frost Check out how loud the birds are in the dawn chorus. Kerr Farm Chardonnay bud burst

Vineyard happenings at Kerr Farm Wine.

September is when the new growing season starts again in the vineyard. All the winter pruning and the taking of cuttings should be finished. I was running a bit late this year so some of my later varieties did not get finished until the middle of the month.

As the soil and the air temperatures rise and the days get longer budburst is stimulated. The buds that have been hiding all winter, begin to emerge from the canes of last year’s fruiting wood. If the winter has had a few cold snaps and some good frosts, budburst is usually quite even and the shoots grow at a similar level of development. However if the winter has been warmer this is not the case and budburst can be uneven and therefor the shoots will be at different levels of development.

This may not seem very important, but it is. If the shoots grow evenly, the grapes, the important part, ripen evenly as well. At harvest time all the grapes will be at a similar stage of development and nice ripe fruit makes good wine. If budburst has been uneven the fruit will also ripen unevenly, so there will be ripe grapes and some not so ripe. This makes winemaking more difficult.

Hail at Kumeu today

Today we had a quick, but surprise hail storm. It only lasted for about 30 seconds but was quite dramatic. This can be very hard on young vine buds, they can be bruised and sometimes broken of the main cane. Early varieties like chardonnay are very prone to this, lets hope not ours. Kerr Farm Pinotage P'08 at Pure Retaurant Herne Bay

The New Release Kerr Farm Pinotage P'08 is on the wine list at Pure Restaurant at 186 Jervous Rd., Herne Bay, Auckland Central. This has worked out perfectly with the celebration of Swiss National day until 13th August 2011 at Pure, serving traditional food from Switzerland.
Chef & owner Stefan Loetschers roots in Switzerland give you the chance to experience homemade sourdough bread, imported Swiss cheeses like Gruyere and Emmentaler, the world famous cheese fondue or the unique Vermicelle.
Enjoy meals like sliced veal in a creamy mushroom sauce with rosti Zuerich style or from the southern part of Switzerland, braised wild rabbit with polenta and porcini ticino style.

I had the veal dish yesterday for lunch and it was delicious and I think the P'08 goes perfectly with it. The braised wild rabbit next time.

Media Release Kerr Farm Pinotage P'08 at Takahe Retaurant and Bar Titirangi

Kerr Farm Wine is pleased to announce that the Famous Kerr Farm Pinotage, the New P’08 vintage, is back on the wine list at Takahe Restaurant and Bar. Owners Cherie and Tate Smeele are pleased to have this wine, very popular with the locals of Titrangi, back on the Wine list.

It is the perfect match to go with our Scotch fillet steak or eveybody’s favourite the lamb shanks say’s Cherie.

The P’08 is the latest vintage of Pinotage from Kerr Farm at Kumeu. This wine is made from the oldest Pinotage vines in New Zealand and is showing the flavours of rich dark fruits with soft ripe tannins and a touch of smoky mushroom. It’s great with chocolate, so keep some for dessert.

Vineyard happenings at Kerr Farm Wine.

Winter is the time for pruning grapevines. During winter the vines are dormant, they have lost all their leaves and the sap is retracting back into the trunk and roots. This stored energy is what the vine uses in early spring to push out the new seasons buds. It is therefore an advantage to leave pruning to the last minute before spring sap rise. Practically this is not really possible. The later pruning also helps delay bud burst to some extent for the early budding vines. This gets the vines past the danger of late frosts which fry the new buds.

So planning is needed in how you prune your block of vines. Prune the later varieties first, because you know they will not bud usually till the frosts have passed. Prune the early varieties last thus delaying their bud burst as much as you can to get them past the frosts.

Next time you are driving past your local vineyards, have a look, some have been pruned, the late budding vines. Those still waiting are the early budding vines. Happy Pruning Jaison Kerr

Only a few of these are made each vintage and we release them when they have aged up a bit.

1999 Semillon, very rare from this vintage. I tried this wine a year ago and it was stunning. Semillon needs plenty of time. $147.00....

Zipvac Vacuum Packing Kit

Here is a product I have come across that I think you may find interesting and very useful

It is called the ZipVac Vacuum Packing kit.

Put your food into the bag, run your finger along the seam, open the vacuum seal and pump the air out of the bag, then lock the seal as shown in steps 1, 2, and 3. This is the 1 Litre bag

· Keeps foods fresh 5 times longer
· Microwavable & Boilable Bags
· Prevents Freezer Burn
· Resealable & Dishwasher Safe Bags

Put them in the fridge or freezer. Good for keeping things in if you go camping or fishing.
I like to use these bags for aging meats, storing cheese, fish and if you have extra casserole put it in the bag, vacuum it and freeze it. When you want to use the casserole, you can boil in the bag.
Wash the bags out or put in the dishwasher and they are ready for next time.

In the household Kit you get

· 2 x 1 litre (19 x 22cm)
· 2 x 4 litre (28 x 30cm)
· 2 x Jumbo 8 litre (35 x 37cm)
· 2 x King Fillet ( 35 x 71cm) fit in a whole Salmon or trout
